Walkers aim high in nursery's cause

A GROUP of walkers are planning to climb three mountains in 24 hours to raise money to help keep a Llandybie nursery open.

Richie Phillips, from Llandybie, will be taking on the Three Peaks Challenge along with 13 friends, who call themselves the Celtic Crusaders, this summer to raise money for the Cylch Meithrin Plant Llandybie.

The challenge will see the group climb Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in the Lake District and finally Snowdon in North Wales in just 24 hours for the Llandybie nursery school.

Richie said the group decided to take on the challenge because they are all keen walkers.

"We all just enjoy walking, but we are not professionals."

Richie said their training is going very well and they are preparing for the challenge by doing lots of hikes at least twice a week.

The group will begin the challenge at 4pm on Thursday, June 27 and hope to successfully complete the task by 4pm Friday, June 28.

Richie said: "We can't wait to do it. It will probably kill us but it will be worth it."

They are hoping to raise as much money as possible for Llandybie Nursery and the Rainbow Trust and will be hosting a series of fundraising events including a sports memorabilia auction and band night to raise funds.

Richie said he wanted to raise money for Cylch Meithrin Plant Llandybie to stay open because his son, Jayden-Lee, goes there.

"There were reports in October saying that they did not have the money to stay open, so we wanted to raise money to help it stay open.

"My son has been there since he was one and I'm doing it because I want to pay them back, he loves it there. I'm also hoping other children will have the chance to go there and experience the nursery."

Richie said they have also chosen the Rainbow Trust, who help terminally ill children, because it is such a good cause.

"We just want to help children in general so they can have a good start in life.

''We are doing so much and are hoping to raise as much money as possible," Richie said.

The group, who hosted a fundraising band night on February 23 at the Garnant Club, will also be holding a sports memorabilia auction on March 23 at Penycroes Rugby Club.
