PENDINE is hoping to draw in the tourists with a packed programme of activities on the beach.

Among the events lined up for summer is a two-day motocross event, vintage motorcycle speed trials, a 150-car meeting of a Ford motor club and even a possible hovercraft event.

On top of this, Pendine Community Council heard a triathlon event was likely to return, as was a beach rugby tournament, and there were also hopes of attracting a strongman competition.

Clerk Chris Delaney told councillors at the monthly meeting: "The triathlon people are keen to come back, and touch rugby is keen to come back.

"I'm putting the diary together.

"There's a large motorcycle speed trial, the Dredgers (motocross) people from Laugharne are coming back for two days.

"There's quite a lot of weekends filling in.

"The West Wales tourism people are looking for some quirky events and they are trying to see if they can get a strong man event at Pendine as well.

"There's another one — these members of a Ford motor club and there's a vintage motor magazine that wants to take a photograph of 150 cars."

Asset

Speaking after the meeting, councillor Gary Aitken, who runs the village post office, said it was positive news.

"The thing we are concentrating on is our main asset — the beach," he said.

"It's the long term understanding of what the beach is about and the heritage of the site, which is why we are attracting an awful lot of people like the bike racing. We would like to get the TT racing back on Pendine, like we used to have in the 1950s — that's the longer-term aim really.

"We are talking to an organisation of vintage drag racers — again, it's to do with the heritage of the site.

"We don't do enough, I think, to celebrate the world speed records that were set here in the 1920s and before, and that's where the attraction lies with Pendine.

"It is nice to have these things, and it's positive for Pendine and Carmarthenshire as well."
